How to Check BVN on Your Phone in Nigeria (3 Quick Ways)

ow to check BVN on your phone in Nigeria: the USSD code, bank app steps and what to do if your SIM is gone.

EXCERPT: Forgot your BVN? You can get it on your phone in under two minutes. Here are the three ways that work, and one trap to avoid.

INTRODUCTION

You’re halfway through signing up for a new app. Everything’s filled in. Then it asks for your BVN.

You freeze. You opened that bank account years ago, and you’ve never written the number down. You scroll through old messages. Nothing.

Don’t worry, this happens to almost everyone. And the fix takes about a minute. Here’s how to check BVN on your phone in Nigeria, even if you’ve never typed that number in your life.

Most people give up and call customer care, then sit on hold. That’s a long way round for an eleven-digit number.

The catch is that the quickest method only works on one specific SIM, and that’s where a lot of people get stuck. So I’ll show you the fast way, plus two backups for when it fails. You’ll also learn how to keep the number safe once you’ve found it.

What Your BVN Is and When You Will Need It

Your Bank Verification Number, or BVN, is an 11-digit number that follows you across the Nigerian banking system. NIBSS issues it under the supervision of the CBN, and it’s tied to your biometric details.

That’s why almost everything asks for it. Opening a bank or fintech account, applying for a loan, signing up on an investment platform: they all use your BVN to confirm you’re really you.

You only enrol once. After that, the number sits quietly in the background until a form asks for it, and by then you’ve forgotten it.

Quick Look at Your Three Options

Arranged in order of; Method | Cost | when it’s best.

  • USSD code *565*0#: About ₦20 in airtime. Best when you have the SIM linked to your BVN.
  • Your bank app: Free. Best when you can log in to your bank app.
  • Bank branch or NIBSS helpdesk: Free.  Best when your SIM is lost or blocked

How to Check BVN on Your Phone in Nigeria With a USSD Code

This is the fastest route. You don’t need the internet, an app or a password.

  1. Put in the SIM linked to your BVN. It’s the number you gave the bank when you enrolled.
  2. Open your dialer and type *565*0#. Then press call.
  3. Follow the prompts. Pulse Nigeria reported that the system asks for your full date of birth.
  4. Read your 11-digit BVN. It shows up on your screen within seconds.
  5. Save it somewhere safe. More on that further down.

It works on MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile. Several guides put the charge at around ₦20, so top up first if your balance is empty.

If nothing happens, check three things. Are you on the right SIM? Do you have airtime? Is your network behaving? A failed dial is almost always one of those.

How to Find Your BVN in Your Bank App for Free

Got a smartphone? Then there’s an even easier route.

  1. Open your bank’s app and log in.
  2. Go to Profile or  Account Details.
  3. Look for BVN or Identification.

Not every bank displays it, so don’t panic if yours doesn’t. Try another bank app if you have one, or go back to the USSD code.

What to Do if You Lost the SIM Linked to Your BVN

This is where people usually get stuck. The USSD code is useless without the registered SIM.

You still have options.

  • Use a bank app. If you can log in, the number may be sitting right there.
  • Visit your bank. Take a valid ID. Naijasabi’s guide says getting your BVN at a branch costs nothing.
  • Contact the NIBSS helpdesk. Kuda’s guide lists the line as 0700-2255-226 and the email as bvn@nibss-plc.com.ng. You will send your full name, date of birth, email address and the phone number linked to your BVN. Confirm those contact details on NIBSS’s official website before you reach out.
  • Use the NIBSS validation portal. It also charges about ₦20, and you’ll need the number linked to your BVN.

If your old number is gone for good, a branch visit with your ID is usually the cleanest fix. Ask the bank to update your phone number while you’re there.

Fixing the Most Common BVN Check Problems

Nothing happens when you dial. Check that you typed the asterisks and the hash exactly as shown. Then try again in a few minutes, because USSD sessions drop when the network is busy.

The code won’t show your BVN. You’re probably on a different SIM from the one you registered. Think about which number you gave the bank, and try that line.

The date of birth doesn’t go through. Enter it exactly as it was registered. If you’ve used different dates on other documents, the mismatch can cause trouble, and a branch visit will sort it out.

You can’t remember which number you used. Check old bank alerts or your account documents for the phone number on file. A bank branch can also tell you once they’ve verified your ID.

Scams and Mistakes to Avoid When You Check Your BVN

Downloading a random “BVN checker” app. Youverify points out that no standalone BVN checker app is endorsed by the CBN or NIBSS. If an app claims otherwise, steer clear.

Sharing your BVN with callers or in chats. A bank won’t need you to read your BVN or an OTP to a stranger. Scam messages often threaten to block your account, so don’t let the pressure rush you.

Typing it into unfamiliar websites. Stick to your bank, the USSD code and NIBSS.

Dialing from the wrong SIM. It sounds basic, but it’s the top reason the code “fails”.

Screenshotting it and forgetting. A BVN sitting in your photo gallery or a WhatsApp chat is easy to leak.

On its own, your BVN can’t move money out of your account. Scammers use it together with other details, though, so treat it as private.

How to Keep Your BVN Safe After You Find It

You don’t need to memorise it, but you shouldn’t leave it lying around either.

Store it in a password manager or a locked note on your phone. Skip screenshots and chat messages. If you must write it down, keep the paper somewhere safe, away from your ATM card.

Also keep an eye on your bank alerts. If you ever see activity you don’t recognise, call your bank right away using the number on its official website.

What to Do Once You Have Your BVN

Now you can finish that sign-up you started.

Enter the number exactly as it appeared, with all 11 digits. Double-check it before you submit, because one wrong digit gets your application rejected.

Then do yourself a favour and confirm your bank has your current phone number on file. It saves you from this scramble the next time.

Wrapping Up

Dial *565*0# from the SIM linked to your BVN, or open your bank app. If your SIM is gone, a branch visit with your ID fixes it.

Once you have the number, keep it private and update your phone number with your bank so this doesn’t happen again.
