How to Link NIN to Your Bank Account (Step by Step)

How to link NIN to your bank account: the app, USSD and branch routes, plus what happens if you don’t.

EXCERPT: Banks can restrict accounts without a linked NIN or BVN. Here’s how to link yours in a few minutes, and what to do if it fails.

INTRODUCTION

Your bank has sent you the same SMS three times now. “Link your NIN to avoid restrictions.”

You keep telling yourself you’ll do it later. Then one day a transfer fails, the app says “account restricted”, and suddenly it’s not later anymore.

If that’s you, relax. Linking is quick, and you can usually do it from your phone. Here’s how to link NIN to your bank account, plus what to do if the link fails.

The annoying part is that every bank does it slightly differently. One uses USSD, another hides it in the app, and a third wants you at the branch. So I’ll walk you through every route and the things that trip people up, like name mismatches.

It takes about five minutes once you have your details to hand. No queues unless you really need one.

By the end, you’ll know exactly what to do and what to have ready before you start.

Why Banks Want Your NIN Linked

The push comes from the CBN. Business Day reported on its circular of 1 December 2023, which made it mandatory for all Tier 1 accounts and wallets to be linked to a BVN and/or NIN.

Tier 1 accounts are the basic ones, with a daily limit of ₦50,000 and a balance cap of ₦300,000. For Tier 2 and Tier 3 individual accounts, the rule is stricter. They need both a BVN and a NIN.

The same report says funded Tier 1 accounts without either number were to be placed on “Post No Debit” from 1 March 2024. That means you can’t send or withdraw money.

There’s a tax angle as well. A September 2026 guide on Androidpols says the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 also pushed for accounts to be linked to a NIN or tax ID by 1 January 2026. Check this with your bank, because the guide is the only source I found for it.

Either way, the safest move is simple. Link your NIN now, on every account you use.

What to Have Ready Before You Link NIN to Your Bank Account

A little prep saves you a lot of trouble. Gather these first:

  • Your 11-digit NIN.  If you’ve forgotten it, you can retrieve it with the NIMC app or by dialling *346# from the SIM linked to your NIN.
  • Your BVN. Many banks ask for it alongside your NIN.
  • The phone number on your bank account. You’ll often get a one-time password there.
  • A valid ID, if you’re going to a branch.

Here’s the tip that saves the most headaches. Using the NIN whose name matches your BVN, because mismatches are a common reason a link fails.

How to Link NIN to Your Bank Account in the Banking App

This is the easiest route for most people. You can do it from the sofa.

  1. Open your bank’s app and log in.
  2. Look for the BVN/NIN or KYC section. It’s usually under Profile, Settings or Account Details.
  3. Enter your 11-digit NIN. Double-check every digit before you submit.
  4. Confirm with your OTP or PIN.
  5. Wait for the confirmation message. Some banks show “pending” for a while, so save the reference.

You pick the BVN/NIN option, start a new request, enter the number and follow the prompts, which may include answering your security questions.

Some banks let you generate a Virtual NIN as part of the process. Ask your bank whether it accepts one before you try.

How to Link Your NIN With USSD or SMS

No smartphone or data? Many banks have a USSD or SMS option.

Nigerian Eye reports that you can text your BVN or NIN, your account number and the number itself to the code your bank gives you.

The catch is that codes differ by bank, and they change. Get yours from your bank’s official website or app, and never dial a code from a random post or chat message.

USSD can cost a little airtime, so check before you start.

How to Link NIN at a Bank Branch When the App Fails

Sometimes the app just won’t cooperate. Then the branch is your fix.

Take your NIN slip or number, your BVN and a valid ID. Ask the customer service desk for a NIN linking form, fill it in and submit it.

The bank will check your details and confirm the link. Ask for an acknowledgement slip or a reference so you’ve got proof.

Then log in to the app a day later and see whether the status has updated. If not, call customer care with your reference.

What Happens if Your Account Isn’t Linked

Banks have already shown they’ll enforce it. TheNigeriaLawyer reported that banking halls were packed after the 1 March 2024 deadline, when unlinked accounts were put on “Post No Debit”.

The restriction usually means you can’t withdraw or transfer until you link. You may still be able to receive money in some cases.

The same rule covers wallets, not just bank accounts. So if you use a fintech app, link your NIN there too.

Fixing Common Problems When You Link NIN to Your Bank Account

The name doesn’t match. Your NIN and BVN carry slightly different spellings. Fix the record at NIMC or your bank, then try again.

The network keeps failing. Vanguard reported customers complaining about network failure during the rush. Try early in the morning or late at night.

Your NIN isn’t found. Re-enter it carefully, and confirm it with NIMC’s retrieval options if you aren’t sure it’s correct.

The link stays “pending”. Keep your reference number and contact customer care. If a week passes with no change, go to the branch.

You’re asked to send it on WhatsApp. Some banks did accept submissions through digital channels. Only use a channel you reached from your bank’s official website or app.

How to Stay Safe While You Link Your NIN

Scammers love deadlines. Whenever a regulator sets one, fake messages follow.

If an SMS says “link your NIN or your account will be blocked” and includes a strange link, don’t tap it. Open your bank’s app or type the website address yourself.

Never give anyone your OTP, PIN or full card details. A real bank link process doesn’t need them.

Also be careful about who handles your documents. Don’t hand your NIN slip to an agent you don’t know.

Wrapping Up

Open your bank’s app, find the NIN or KYC section, and link it today. If the app won’t let you, take your NIN slip, BVN and ID to the branch.

Do the same for every account and wallet you use, then check that the status is updated.
