How to Check NIN Number Online in Nigeria (4 Easy Ways)

How to check NIN number online in Nigeria: the NIMC app, the portal, *346# and what to do if your SIM is gone.

EXCERPT: Lost your NIN slip? You can get the number back from your phone in minutes. Here are four ways that work, and what to do if they don’t.

INTRODUCTION

Your bank just asked for your NIN. The form on your screen won’t move until you type it in.

You remember getting the slip. You even remember the long queue at the NIMC office. But the slip itself? Somewhere in a drawer at your parents’ house, or in the pocket of a jacket you gave away.

Take a breath. You don’t need that slip. In most cases, you can get your NIN back from your phone in a few minutes, and here’s how to check NIN number online in Nigeria without queueing again.

Most people assume they have to go back to an enrolment centre. You usually don’t.

Some of the methods need data, some only need a little airtime, and one only works if you still have a particular SIM. l will show you all of them, plus what to do when none of them work, so you can get back to whatever you were doing.

What Your NIN Is and Why It Matters More in 2026

Your National Identification Number, or NIN, is an 11-digit number issued by the National Identity Management Commission, known as NIMC. It’s your identity record with the government.

These days, it’s asked for almost everywhere. SIM registration, passport applications, bank onboarding and many app sign-ups all lean on it.

It’s also becoming more important. Shufti Pro’s guide notes that NIMC launched NINAuth in May 2025, a platform that lets agencies and businesses authenticate a NIN in real time.

There’s a tax angle too. Some 2026 guides report that, under the new tax laws that took effect in January, your NIN doubles as your individual tax ID. Check the details with the tax authority if that affects you.

Four Ways to Check Your NIN Easily

Arranged in order of; Method | Cost | when it’s best

  • NIMC Mobile ID app: Data only.  You have a smartphone and internet.
  • USSD code *346#: About ₦20. You have the SIM linked to your NIN.
  • NIMC online portal: it’s free. You want to confirm details from a laptop or phone.
  • NIMC enrolment centre: Free to ask. Your SIM is lost or the other methods fail

Costs vary a little between guides, so treat them as a rough guide.

How to Check NIN Number Online in Nigeria With the NIMC App and Portal

This is the route most people mean when they say “online”. It works from anywhere, and it doesn’t use airtime.

Start with the app. Several guides point to the NIMC Mobile ID app as the simplest official option.

  1. Download the official app. Search for “NIMC Mobile ID” on Google Play or the Apple App Store.
  2. Sign in with your registered phone number. The app sends a one-time password to the number linked to your NIN.
  3. Open your ID details. Your NIN shows up on the profile or ID screen.
  4. Save it somewhere safe. Don’t screenshot it and forget it.

One honest warning. The sign-in steps have changed over time, and guides disagree on them. Some say you need your NIN to log in, while others say you register with your phone number and email. Follow the prompts you see, and use the number you enrolled with.

The NIMC online portal is the second option.

In other words, it’s better for checking a number than for finding a forgotten one. Go to nimc.gov.ng and type the address yourself instead of tapping a link from a message.

How to Retrieve Your NIN With the *346# Code When You Have No Data

No smartphone? No data? This one’s for you.

It’s an old favourite for a reason. It works on any phone, and the whole thing takes a minute.

  1. Use the SIM linked to your NIN. The code only returns your number from the line registered to your record.
  2. Dial *346# and press call.
  3. Press 1 to select NIN retrieval.
  4. Read your 11-digit NIN. It appears on screen.

Expect a service fee of about ₦20, so keep some airtime on the line.

If the code returns nothing, the likely cause is the SIM. If you changed SIMs, or the old number was deactivated for inactivity, *346# won’t show your NIN.

What to Do if You Lost the SIM or the Codes Don’t Work

This is the stuck point for many people. Don’t worry, there’s still a way through.

Visit a NIMC enrolment centre. Officials there can help you retrieve your NIN if you bring a valid means of identification.

Check which numbers are linked to your NIN. Dialling *996# shows the numbers tied to your record, so you can work out which SIM you actually used.

Try your network provider’s portal or app. You can see linked lines there too.

If you’ve lost the old number for good, the enrolment centre is the safest bet. Take your ID and ask them to update the phone number while you’re there.

Quick Fixes When Your NIN Check Doesn’t Work

Nothing happens when you dial. Check that the code is typed exactly as *346#, then try again in a few minutes. USSD sessions drop when networks get busy.

You’re on the wrong SIM. It’s the top reason the code fails. Think hard about which number you gave NIMC when you enrolled.

The app won’t let you in. Make sure you downloaded the official one. Check the details you’re using against your enrolment record.

The details show up wrong. A misspelt name or wrong date of birth should be fixed at NIMC. Don’t ignore it, because mismatches can hold up bank and passport applications.

How to Keep Your NIN Safe and Avoid Scams

Your NIN is a key to your identity, so look after it.

Skip “NIN retrieval” agents who charge a fee. If someone offers to fetch your number from a random website, walk away. The official routes are cheap or free.

Type official addresses yourself. Fake portals copy the real look. If you reach a site from a text message or social media post, close it.

Share only what’s needed. NIMC also offers a Virtual NIN, a temporary number you can hand over instead of your real one. The *346# menu and the NIMC app both mention it, so ask for it where it’s accepted.

Don’t leave it in your gallery. Photos of your slip or number can leak through backups and chats.

What to Do Once You Have Your NIN

Now finish that form. Type the NIN exactly as it appeared, all 11 digits.

Check that your name and date of birth match what’s on your other documents. One small mismatch can cause delays.

While you’re at it, save the number in a password manager or a locked note. Then confirm which phone number is linked to your NIN and keep that SIM active, so the next retrieval takes a minute.

Your Next Step for Checking Your NIN

Use the NIMC Mobile ID app if you have data, or dial *346# from the right SIM if you don’t. If neither works, visit an enrolment centre with your ID.

Once you have the number, store it securely and keep the linked SIM alive.
